Teaching young musicians fundamental skills one-on-one while forming the next generation of bands across NWA!!

ABOUT

RockEd is a semester-long rock band camp for students ages 8-18 in Northwest Arkansas. Our mission is to teach young musicians fundamental skills one-on-one while forming the next generation of bands across NWA. Whether beginners or longtime musicians, every student learns the foundations of songwriting, intricacies of their instrument, and skills to perform. Students are grouped into bands based on age and skill level, and learn how to creatively work together throughout the program. Every semester culminates in a performance for friends and family to showcase their work and the opportunity to record and release their original songs. Retelling Rock ‘N Roll “Herstory” from a diverse perspective is an integral piece of our curriculum, so students learn cover songs by iconic women and underrepresented artists and participate in artist of the month presentations. We prioritize remaining an accessible, low-cost program, with a focus on individualized learning strategies. This includes providing instruments to take home when students don’t have their own and offering need-based scholarships to our programming.

RockEd partners with local nonprofits to offer the most accessible programming across NWA. The majority of our programming is hosted at the Fayetteville Folk School in partnership with Ozark Folkways, but we host free workshops at the Springdale Station in partnership with the Teen Action and Support Center, and aim to expand to other cities in the future. These partnerships allow us to funnel a portion of our profits back into the local nonprofit creative education scene.

More information on our individual programs including semester RockEd, Girl Power Rock summer camp, Kids Rock summer camp, and our free workshops can be found in the menu bar.

OUR STORY

RockEd was founded by two college students, Milcah Hulen-Posnak and Breanna McArdle, and local music teacher, Jori Costello. All three of them are active performing musicians in female-fronted bands. Milcah and Breanna met in high school when they formed the all-women indie rock band The Misdemeanors. As underaged women musicians, they faced many challenges navigating the male-dominated, majority 21+ music scene. This led them to the idea to create a women-led rock band camp to encourage young musicians to start bands and teach them everything they wish they would’ve known. Along the way, they met Jori Costello and formed RockEd semester programming, Girl Power Rock Summer Camp, and Kids Rock Summer Camp. Being college-aged teachers, they are able to promote life mentorship and role modeling for their students, while leaning on the decades long teaching experience of Jori.
